300 French Scholarships for Indians

The Embassy of France has offered more than 300 scholarships this year under its ­flagship Charpak programme for ­master’s degrees, exchange semesters and research ­internships. The scholarship award ceremony took place in the presence of HE Laurent Fabius, minister of foreign affairs and international development, France, who was on an official visit to India from June 30, 2014 to July 1, 2014.

Addressing the students, Fabius said, “You are young and bright, you carry hopes for the future of our ­countries’ relations, and before you become ambassadors of France to India, get ready to become ­ambassadors of your ­magnificent country in the eyes of your French peers. I’m happy to say that ­Indo-French relations in the field of higher education have never been stronger. Today, nearly 500 agreements bind Indian and French institutions of higher learning.”

The event was followed by a ceremony wherein a series of agreements between prestigious French and Indian higher education institutions were signed.

The Charpak programme is designed for one to two years of studies in France at the master’s degree level and is open for all domains and fields. Benefits of the scholarship include free student visa, including CEF (Centre for Studies in France) fee waiver, monthly stipend of 615 euros for up to 10 months, ­medical insurance coverage (around  300 euros per year), assistance for affordable student accommodation and full tuition waiver at public universities.

Nikhila Hans, who is currently pursuing BTech in chemical engineering from IIT (Delhi) says, “With Charpak scholarship for exchange students, I will get a chance to do third year courses in the chemical department at Institut National des Sciences Appliquées de Toulouse (INSA), France. Being home to some of the most renowned chemical companies in the world, for example, Danone, Lafarge and L’Oreal, France is the best place to study in the chemical field. With research schools such as École Nationale Dupérieure des Industries Chimiques (ENSIC), I will get an opportunity to explore future options in the same field.”

For Tushita Yadav, a graduate in economics from Kamala Nehru College, Delhi University, studying in France is a logical next step given its prominence in the global economy, a huge market for its financial services, reputation of its business schools and state-of-the-art facilities. “Besides academic qualifications, it is important to have a well-rounded personality. Limiting yourself to prescribed textbooks doesn’t help, involvement in extra-curricular activities will give you an edge over others. So, it is important to strike a balance between the two,” advises Yadav, who will start her masters in finance from ESSEC Business School in August.

International exposure is what attracted Akshay Agrawal from Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad. “My course includes 18 months of professional experience which is way more than any management institute in India could offer. A flexible course structure is an added advantage,” says Agrawal, who will be pursuing a masters of science course in management from ESSEC Business School.

To be eligible for Charpak scholarship, an applicant must be an Indian national and reside in India. He/she should be a student enrolled at an Indian institution of higher learning or a young professional employed in a company for maximum three years.
